Standard 6: External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership.

opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the
school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.

I collaborated with staff to organize the Durham School of the Arts Fall Art Festival. This event allows DSA to celebrate the rich cultural diversity in Durham. Some of my specific duties that evening were to ensure that staff had access to facilities, that security controlled traffic on N Gregson Street, greeting guests from the community, and ensuring that the campus was properly cleaned and locked after the event. This experience taught me how to see a major event through the lens of an administrator. My responsibilities reminded me that administrators must be able to see the school from a 50,000 foot view and facilitate the movement of multiple complex variables.
Element 6b. Federal, State and District Mandates:
The principal designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.

Principal Hawks assigned a project to me in which I was asked to analyze the arts concentrations in the class of 2020. This required that I review each senior transcript, place the data in Google Forms, and present my research at the weekly DSA Administrators meeting. In addition, my work confirmed that the DSA WorkKeys Assessment list matched the list from the district.
This unique project taught me how to accurately read a high school transcript and how to monitor the academic progress of students from one year to the next. These skills allow a high school administrator to ensure that the school is indeed fulfilling its responsibility to all students.
